School ‘Em

The younger members of the MTCGear staff (my sons) got it twisted. Somehow these boys think todays hip hop is better than the hip hop from back in the day!! Which leaves me wondering what’s wrong with the younguns these days?? So you know I had to set ’em straight!! In order to to this I challenged them to an old school Vs. new school hip hop versus battle.

To be clear, I respect many of the younger generation Emcees, however I’m old school. I’ve been listening to hip hop since the late 70s, so when I listen to hip hop I hold it to a certain standard. As a result for me to respect your music it’s got to contain at least the following two elements:

#BARZ

First, you gotta have BARZ! Too many of the youngsters today want to be rappers, and not Emcees. Meaning they don’t respect the art of crafting lyrics to express a complete thought in a creative, thought provoking way. However creativity is what made hip hop so fly! So in the beginning nobody wanted to sound like the next man. Nowadays too many people seem like they’re trying to sound the same. Too much Autotune, singing, mumbling, and whining instead of going hard on the M-I-C.

#BEATZ

Second, you gotta have a tight beats. It also helps if you have good samples, and a DJ scratching. However today not enough of the producers respect the art of digging in the crates. They don’t take the time to find that one sound that’ll set their beat apart from other beats. That type of creativity propelled hip hop to the apex of global pop culture. I feel like that fact is lost on too many of the youngsters in hip hop. Cutting and scratching also seems to be lost on them. Too many producers, not enough DJs.

Hip Hop Versus Battle Rules

In this battle, old school was everything before the year 2000, and new school was everything after 2000. We each chose 6 songs. We played one verse from each song.

Who won?

They came stronger than I thought they would, and I was actually proud of ’em, but we all know the old school is the best right? You be the judge… Watch this video of the first songs from the hip hop versus battle and leave a comment as to which one you think wins…
