What is Hip Hop Culture?

Today many media outlets claim to respect the culture of Hip Hop, but don’t know anything about The Culture. However, here at MTC we respect The culture. What is Hip Hop culture? you might ask. Hip hop culture is comprised of the 5 elements: The DJ, The MC, The Aerosol Artist (graffiti), the B-Boy (breakdancers) and the crowd (style). Somewhere along the way due to the commercialization of rap music they have separated the MC from the rest of the culture and now call the rap music Hip hop. Hip Hop is a culture note just music. It is so much more rich and deep than just music.

Be the Flyest

Too many media outlets today claim to be Hip Hop but only show respect for one element of the culture: The MC. You may think they respect the DJ but do they?? Embedded in the DNA of Hip Hop is a fundamental thirst for competition, and individualism, and self expression. As a result of this competition to be the flyest, true Hip Hop DJs are always looking for the NEW music that no one has heard, and they try to play it in a way that is different from everyone else.

Hip Hop Radio?

When you listen to Radio stations today whether you’re in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, or San Francisco you hear the same songs over and over and over all day. That’s because they are payed to play a playlist of songs (whether they are good or not) by the record companies. These are the songs that the companies want to promote. Is that Hip Hop?? The answer is a resounding NO! It is the opposite of Hip Hop! Where is the cutting, scratching, and mixing? I don’t want to hear the same song 10 times/day, I want to hear the new hot shit!

Blogs?

When you look at the “Hip Hop” blogs on the web what do they talk about? The MCs. Where is the respect for the DJ? What about Graffiti? What about the B-boys? Don’t get me wrong I love rap music and REAL MCs, but Here at MTC we feel that as a result of this separation the true culture has been watered down, and has less of an impact in the communities that it serves than it could or even should.
