What is an MC?

The MTC MC Tee is inspired by the lyrical geniuses that helped to make hip hop the dominant musical, and cultural force in the world. The original MCs were basically hype men given the mic to keep he crowd engaged at  Hip Hop parties. These epic parties were thrown by DJs such as Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, & Afrika Bambaataa. Thats where the name MC comes from (master of ceremonies). But they were in the crowd not on stage. The MC has evolved from behind the scenes, to be the star of the show. The face to face MC battles that were held to prove who had the best skills & settle beefs, helped the MCs make a name for themselves. Cyphers which consisted of MCs in a circle trading rhymes, and showing off their lyrical dexterity also contributed to the MCs becoming the stars of the show.

An MC is not just someone who can rap well, there are many rappers that are not MCs. MCs create the verbal expression of hip hop culture.
